Vilanculos, Mozambique
it does take some effort to get there, but the trip is well worth it. It’s not so much the town of Vilanculos but the tranquil haven of Bazaruto Islands off its coast. The islands (without permanent residents) are everything one can dream of: miles of untouched sand, limpid warm waters, coral reefs, fluorescent fish, dhows, extraordinary sunsets, seafood. Don’t forget to take a peek at the island’s interior. The sand dunes, mangrove forests and inland lakes are home to 125 species of birds as well as a variety of mammals and even one or two crocodiles.
